[update] How to prevent comment spam the easy way

Philipp Lenssen reports:

Google today will announce they support a new attribute for links to combat comment spam. I briefly reported on this before, and there’s already discussion in the forum. The HTML needed would look like this …

This is <a href="http://www.example.com" rel="nofollow">an example</a>.

… and is perfectly valid according to the W3C

Great news! Yes, it does not prevent comment spam directly; but it takes away any incentive the spammers have for comment spam. I’m sure the spammers will eventually find ways to work around this – or simply concentrate on the many blogs and guesbooks that don’t have this feature – but right now we’re one step ahead in the arms race.

Check out Philipps post as well as Google Blog, Yahoo Blog and msnsearch blog for more details and links to participating search engines and blog hosts.

Update: I just implemented Clint Eckers wp-nofollow plugin. It seems to be working fine. I’ll switch to unmoderated comments now.
