Get a Greenphone if you don’t like the iPhone

While everybody’s complaining about the “closed” nature of the iPhone, they completely missed the Open Source Greenphone. Mike Rowehl seems pretty happy about it. I guess you have to be a tech wizard to get that thing running, but there’s also a version from Trolltech with pre-installed software (or is that the same phone?).

The same phone. In my post what I meant was that I had compiled a new application of my own and gotten it installed. The phone is usable as it ships. Trolltech really isn’t ramping up to sell the things in consumer quantities however. Their assumption is that someone will license the platform to produce their own version, and that will sell in consumer quantities.

Thanks for the info. It looks like the perfect platform for mobile services, I’m almost surprised nobody has created such a phone before.I guess some day in the future we’ll be able to custom-build (or at least custom-order) not only the phone software but also the hardware.
